Ingredients

  • 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Paprika (optional)
  • Vegetable or canola oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cheese mixture, chill until rock hard, and set up three breading stations with flour, egg wash, and panko.
  2. Form the cheese into balls, coat in flour, egg, and panko, then freeze again for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Heat oil to 375°F (190°C) in a heavy pot.
  4. Fry cheese balls in batches for 2-3 minutes until deep golden brown.
  5. Drain on a wire rack and serve immediately while hot.
