- 3 pounds green beans (trimmed and cut into 1.5-inch pieces)
- 1 medium yellow onion (finely diced)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 pound cooked ham (diced into small cubes)
- 1 cup chicken broth (low-sodium preferred)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)

Instructions
- Trim and cut the green beans into 1.5-inch pieces. Dice the ham and onion, and mince the garlic.
- Place green beans, ham, onion, and garlic into the slow cooker. Pour in the chicken broth and sprinkle with brown sugar and pepper.
- Dot the top with butter cubes. Do not add salt yet.
- Cover and cook on Low for 4 to 5 hours, or on High for 2 to 3 hours, until beans are tender but not mushy.
- Stir gently, taste for seasoning, and add salt if needed before serving.
