  • 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
  • 2 cups assorted fresh berries
  • For Lemon Butter Sauce: 3/4 cup sugar, 6 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons water, 1 large egg, 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Spread cubed brioche on a baking sheet and toast for about 5 minutes until golden brown.
  3. In a large bowl, combine warm bread cubes with melted butter.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and lemon zest until smooth.
  5. Coat an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish with butter.
  6. Layer half of the bread in the dish followed by half of the berries; repeat layers.
  7. Pour custard mixture over the layers and gently press down.
  8. Bake uncovered for about 45–50 minutes until set and golden brown.
  9. Cool for at least 20 minutes before serving.
