  • 4 ounces German chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup German Chocolate Frosting

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, bring 1/2 cup heavy cream and cocoa powder to a boil while whisking constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 seconds.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in chopped German chocolate until smooth. Add the remaining cream and set aside.
  3. In the same saucepan, warm whole milk, sugar, and salt over medium heat until dissolved.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks and gradually add warm milk mixture while stirring. Pour back into the saucepan and cook until thickened (about 170°F).
  5. Strain the milk mixture into the chocolate mixture and stir in vanilla extract. Cool in an ice bath then refrigerate for one hour.
  6. Churn in an ice cream maker according to instructions. Gently fold in spoonfuls of frosting before transferring to an airtight container.
